Parenting 

Parenting is the process of the upbringing of children from infancy to adulthood with protection to ensure their healthy development. Fostering is the way to promote their physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development.

Rules – No hard and fast rule for parenting

Every parents and child have their own experiences so. There is no hard and fast rule for parenting. Recollecting my days of childhood, I have ever seen our parents searching for parenting tips. I don’t remember our parents talking about parenting or child psychologists. Nowadays parenting classes are held, couples planning for a baby dive into parenting tips, and so on to be a good parent.  Parenting plays a vital role in today’s era.

Traditional Parenting 

Earlier there was no such definition for the term ‘Parenting’. Rules or much concern was not there for rearing kids. Parenting as an entity was not having much importance but cultures, beliefs, and following customs were an essential part of daily chores. It played a prominent role to raise us as a good human being without any parenting guides. For instance- Mythological stories taught us to observe -values, social skills of adjusting and sharing intellectual dealing with each other, and the importance of physical fitness. Fasting was encouraged for inculcating patience and to overcome temptations. Knowingly or unknowingly it was a part of parenting. Therefore living in a joint family is having its advantages.

Modern Parenting

On the flip, today raising kids is a challenge. Therefore parents go through all parenting articles with the hope that it will assist to foster their little ones to turn as well-being in this universe. Parenting has been gained and treated as a separate entity.

Family Structure

  • The culture of a joint family is aided with good socializing skills, less egocentric people, a sense of humor, fewer health issues, and emotional stability.
  • People are rooted in their native place. Above all expectations were limited. On the other hand, more job opportunities, development in technology enforced people to migrate to other destinations.
  • As a result, nuclear families come into existence with a lot of issues. For instance-eating disorders, engaging children in technology, quality time, working parents, health issues, playing indoor games, emotional instability, and other psychological issues. Thus, the family structure matters a lot in the role of rearing our kids.

 Parenting Skills are required or not

  • In the cut-throat competition fostering skills are a must, it enables parents and the young ones to handle adverse situations with ease. Even parents have different experiences in the same situations. As everybody has their own perspective towards life, so as their own parenting styles differ.

Types of Parenting 

While rearing children there is no thumb rule to follow a particular type of parenting but it definitely matters for the kids although they are not aware of it.

  1. Authoritarian Parenting- Parents are the center point, the young ones have the role of obeying the elder ones. Logical thinking and emotional aspects are at the least. Parent-child relation is passive. They are more disciplinary. they exert power control by power and coercion. Fear of punishment leads them to unfair behavior and low self-esteem.  
  2. Authoritative Parenting – Children are at the center point. Parents are strict but warm too. They can understand the perspective of the child and later, explain the aftermath of their actions. It is an active mode of parenting. Due respect is given to a child’s perspective. Children have high self-esteem and self-worth.
  3. Permissive-They believes in treating kids like friends and interfere when a serious problem occurs. No such disciplinary rules are imposed to be followed. Children under such parenting face academic problems.
  4. Uninvolved Parenting Freedom is high. No hard and fast rule to be obeyed. Children have the freedom to decide as they feel. Such parenting is the result of time constraints and lack of awareness.
  5. Helicopter Parenting – Overindulgence, excessive protection, and high expectations have led them to hyper involvement and hover like a helicopter in a child’s life. They are supportive but over-involvement is an afflict.

What is the need for parenting skills?

Being a mother of two and a teacher, I realized rearing kids is not an easy task. Changing technologies, high rate of competition has made this task more challenging. In fostering, children are the center point. Therefore, it is necessary to understand their view too. We are free to accept whichever style we want, but children don’t have this option. So, it’s the duty of the parent to handle this situation wisely and equip themselves with parenting skills. Parenting requires a lot of patience, empathy,  involvement, unlearning the learned practices, and learning unlearned practices. To raise to achieve  Don’t forget that children are keen observers and they are watching you more closely. Fostering styles are individual choices.

11  Ways Of Positive Parenting

  1. Respect their individuality- Children are joyful and chirpy. They are different in nature. They cannot differentiate the seriousness of the situation. Their interests to differ like our choices of parenting, respect the individual difference, and accept them as they are.

  2. Share the stories of your failuresPeople of every age group avoid failings in life. Children react aggressively to hide their shame and withdraw themselves from the group. Motivate children by sharing their own experiences of losing the game and overcoming it. Teach them to value competitions.

  3. Encourage them to take decisions- Overprotecting children and overruling will affect their self-worth. Reward them for their achievements and decision-making skills.

  4. Teach them to shoulder responsibilities- Engage them in household chores, which will help them to understand the difficulties faced in day to day life.

  5.  Teach them to value your earnings Nowadays working parents believe in fulfilling all the needs of their kids to exhibit their love and affection. children should be taught to value whatever they are getting. Fulfilling all the wishes of children will lead them to adjustment issues in their later life.

  6. Quality Time- Spend some quality time with your child is- playing, reading, coloring, gardening, exchanging opinions,  listening to them will strengthen the bonding.

  7. Developing interests and hobbies- In this digital era, children are facing numerous competitions. At times, they are not able to handle the stress. Therefore, developing interest and hobbies are like stress busters which will help them to strive with adverse situations. In a later stage, their interests will turn out into habits. Thus, it is a life long investment.

  8. Encourage them to spend some time in silence- Children are chirpy they love to hang out with friends. Motivate them to spend some time observing silence through practicing meditation, yoga, or chanting. This will help them to resolve their past resentment.

  9. Sense of Empathy- Encouraging children to differentiate them between empathy and sympathy. Empathy helps them to connect with people and they will be a great listener, Sometimes people want is an empathetic ear, not judgments.

  10. Valuing yourself- Children are keen observers. Actions have more influence than words.  Treating yourself respectfully will help them to understand the value of self-respect. They observe your gestures, the way you treat yourself. Don’t compromise with your values, handle your victories, and failures sensibly.

  11. Expectations are an endless process-Train your brain to live in present. Dwelling in the past or future will only give discontentment. People have a strong desire to win or to be better than others. There is an endless list of expectations. As soon as we achieve a goal. The other one starts popping up in our thoughts. Humans keep on running after them till the end. Train them to live in the present rather than dwelling in the past or future.

Conclusion 

Every parent has their own style of parenting. As every child is a different individual. Experiences of parenting also differ. Sharing experiences and discussions will help to resolve our hurdles. Traditional Parenting or Modern Parenting, both aims to nurture the child. So that they can live a contented and successful life. It is clear in the tech-savvy world, parents too have a great challenge. Parents have to choose the style more consciously. As a result, it will create a bridge, not a gulf between the generations.
